Of all the topics that were given by GE, we chose “The Art of Data” to work with. Using the database provided by the company, we came up with a web based application so that users to track the usage of all applications that runs within the organization and analyze whether it is efficient to keep the machine or not, or whether to host a virtual machine from one computer to another so that the cost of subscription can be reduced. Our project is divided into two different parts. The first part is to conduct an analysis over all machines that runs the application to find the average usage as well as the number of computers that do not use the program often (less than 1%). By having these data, we can see the overall consumption of the company on an app, as well as finding an opportunity to reduce cost of implementation. The second part of our project is dedicated to cost analysis. Having the information from the first part of the project which is the number of computers that do not use the product often, we can calculate the benefit by ending the subscription of the app on those. Furthermore, on the machines that do not use up its all capacity, we might be able to run virtual machine on others, which reduces the money spent on subscription enormously. Hosting a virtual machine costs less than 1$/hour, which is far less than the amount of money paid for subscription. This is a sum up on our one day project. I think it would be useful for managers, especially entrepreneurs who makes critical business decisions daily.
