Inspiration
The inspiration for this project was my personal experiences with art and story writing. When starting a new piece of artwork or writing a story, I have often struggled with thinking of a good idea to start things off, and many other people have faced or are facing similar problems. Being extremely passionate about both art and story writing, I was determined to solve this ever-present issue.
What it does
The Art Corner spurs the creativity of aspiring artists and authors by giving them creative writing/drawing prompts to guide their creative thinking process. Based on their needs, users can choose between getting creative writing prompts for an art project they are starting or a story they are beginning to write.
How I built it
I built this website using a web developer site called Glitch. I mainly used HTML for the front end development of my website as well as CSS to make it look nice, and I used Javascript for the back end. Although I knew a good amount of HTML and CSS, I was not as familiar with Javascript, so I used what I learned from the Web Dev Beginner and Web Dev Intermediate Workshops to create the back end of my website. Whenever I was confused about something in Java, I asked one of the mentors for help.
Challenges I ran into
One major challenge I ran into was installing OnlyOffice. For some reason, OnlyOffice was refusing to install and I was finally able to get it installed on Sunday morning. Although I lost a lot of time, I was fortunately able to finish my presentation using OnlyOffice. I was originally planning to also add some documents advertising my project, and had I had more time, I could have added those, but I am glad that I was able to finish the main part of my project pitch. Another challenge was that halfway through creating my presentation using OnlyOffice, the window froze, and it took half an hour to eventually unfreeze. Despite this, I was still able to get my presentation done in time.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
One accomplishment that I am definitely proud of is learning more Javascript. Before this hackathon, I knew very little Javascript. However, thanks to the Web Dev workshops, I learned a lot more about what I could do using Javascript and the different functions and classes I could use. I am also proud of the website I made as it definitely turned out better than I expected. In addition to this, I am proud of learning how to use OnlyOffice, because before this hackathon, I did not know what OnlyOffice was. I am proud of being able to create a presentation using OnlyOffice.
What I learned
I learned how to create more advanced websites and how to use the different functions and methods in Javascript. I also learned more about things I could do using HTML, such as how to create text boxes to get user input and display it on the screen. I am extremely grateful to everyone who hosted the various workshops and the help I received as the knowledge I gained made creating this website possible. I definitely learned a lot from this hackathon and truly enjoyed the experience.
What's next for The Art Corner
While I definitely got more done than I expected, there are still things I would like to add to my project in the future if I ever get time. The current versions of the creative writing and drawing prompts are pretty basic, so I would like to develop them further by narrowing down the possibilities to make idea forming even easier, adding more prompts/questions, or displaying images of possible art that could be made using the things the user entered. I would also like to make a social media page with features such as likes and comments where people could post their art/stories and get feedback from one another. I would also like to add more stories as well as possibly story starters to the story writing section.
