Inspiration
"The Aquarium of Gaze" is inspired by the profound psychological weight of living as a public subject, rooted in Japanese traditional culture symbols that explore isolation and impermanence. The work interrogates the complex relationship between the individual and mass surveillance, specifically addressing the existential dread, solitude, and pervasive culture of death that arises when one exists solely for the social gaze. The film aims to capture the pivotal moment when the observed subject realizes a change is necessary.
What it does
This experimental short film functions as a stark, cinematic portrait of a young man’s inner life as he performs under silent observation. Through powerful visuals (suggesting the "aquarium"), the film dissects themes of voyeurism and isolation, creating an emotional bridge that allows the audience to confront the psychological cost of being constantly watched and judged in the modern age.
How we built it
How we built it This film was built on a precise workflow focused on achieving aesthetic consistency across a demanding motion sequence:
Character & Aesthetic: The character images, including the design aesthetic, were first generated using Midjourney.
Consistency: We employed the Nanobanana technique specifically to maintain the complex details of the kimono garment. This technique used the refined character image as a key reference to ensure the clothing remained consistent across the motion sequence.
Video Generation: VEO 3.1 was the core video generator. We provided the refined start and end frames of the performance as inputs to guide the motion and visual flow of the dance.
Post-Production: Standard editing software and voice generators were used for final assembly, sound design, and pacing.
Challenges we ran into
The primary challenge was maintaining the fidelity of complex visual details during the character's motion, combined with the difficulty of hitting the specific tonal goal:
Aged Aesthetic Fidelity: The most significant hurdle was consistently translating and maintaining the distressed makeup and the aged/dilapidated look of the kimono across the dynamic dance sequence. Even with the Nanobanana technique, the AI often wanted to "clean up" the garment.
Tonal Control: We struggled to ensure the highly conceptual themes of solitude and death were presented with the intended sharp, slightly fun edge, requiring extensive iteration on prompts and editing to balance the deep subject matter with an engaging, short-form presentation.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of successfully translating a deep, conceptual thesis into a visually compelling experimental short film that remains short, sharp, and engaging. The successful implementation of the Nanobanana technique, despite the complex challenge of the distressed kimono, allowed us to maintain the artistic integrity and Japanese cultural symbolism central to the film’s powerful aesthetic.
What we learned
We confirmed the difficulty inherent in generating consistent, complex fabric details (like the kimono) and makeup during high-motion sequences, forcing us to refine control over the AI's tendency toward "perfection." We also learned how to use tight editing and specific visual contrasts to achieve a sharp and fun tone even when dealing with heavy themes like solitude and the culture of death.
What's next for The Aquarium of Gaze
We plan to submit this work to experimental film festivals and expand the conceptual work into a gallery installation or a series of shorts exploring related themes of surveillance and performance art through the lens of Japanese cultural symbolism.
Technically, the next steps will focus on overcoming the consistency challenge of the kimono and the subtle motion: We will specifically focus on incorporating advanced motion capture data to refine the AI's ability to generate subtle, highly controlled dance movements, ensuring perfect continuity of the distressed garment and the subject's emotional state.
