Inspiration

We asked ourselves a simple question: “Why is it so hard to find authentic Amala spots, even in Nigeria?” Popular restaurant apps don’t highlight local food culture, and the hidden gems where Amala truly shines often remain undocumented. That inspired us to build The Amala Joint — a platform that celebrates Nigerian heritage while solving a real community problem.

What it does

The Amala Joint is a community-powered mobile app that helps users: • Discover authentic Amala spots nearby through a map and list view. • Share reviews, ratings, and photos to guide others. • Add new spots, giving small food vendors visibility. • Chat with AmalaBot, our AI-powered assistant that recommends dishes, answers cultural questions, and suggests perfect soup pairings. It’s not just about food — it’s about preserving culture, building community, and making discovery fun.

How we built it

• Frontend: Mobile-first UI built with [Figma + v0/Bolt.new]. • Backend: Firebase / Supabase for storing spots, reviews, and images. • Maps: Integrated Google Maps / Leaflet for geolocation. • AI Chatbot: Simple NLP logic to simulate Amala recommendations and cultural insights. • Design System: Brand colors (Deep Red, White, Light Gray), clean typography, modern cards with rounded edges.

Challenges we ran into

• Ensuring real-time data updates for new spots across users. • Creating a balance between cultural authenticity and modern design. • Integrating a chatbot within the short hackathon timeline.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

• Building a functional, polished mobile app in record time. • Introducing Amala Passport, a unique gamification feature no competitor included. • Successfully creating an AI-powered chatbot (AmalaBot) tailored to local food culture. • Designing a product that is not only useful, but fun and culturally impactful.

What we learned

• The power of community-driven design — users shape the platform. • How gamification can transform a simple app into a movement. • Balancing tech, design, and culture makes solutions more meaningful. • That even local food can inspire global-level innovation.

What's next for The Amala Joint

• Adding user authentication & profiles for deeper personalization. • Expanding beyond Amala to other local Nigerian delicacies. • Partnering with local food vendors for promotions and rewards. • Launching in universities and cultural hubs as pilot communities. • Building a social layer where food lovers can connect and share experiences.
