Inspiration

I wanted to capture the quiet ache of being hyperconnected yet deeply alone. Watching people in Shibuya crossing, each lit by the glow of their phones, I kept wondering how many near-missed stories live in a single city block. The Algorithmic City grew from that feeling: a soft, visual poem about the moments we almost share.

What it does

The film follows two strangers, Kai and Ryan, moving through neon Tokyo—cafés, crossings, rain-soaked streets constantly close yet never quite meeting. With no dialogue, only visuals, sound, and subtle expressions, it explores modern loneliness, digital distraction, and how our screens both connect and separate us.

How we built it

I outlined the parallel journeys of Kai and Ryan as a silent, shot-by-shot storyboard, then used AI video and image tools to generate stylized Tokyo environments, characters, and camera moves. After that, I stitched and paced everything in an editor, adding sound design and music to turn their near-misses into a flowing, cinematic experience.

Challenges we ran into

The hardest part was conveying emotion without dialogue or exposition just glances, gestures, and timing. On the technical side, keeping character looks consistent across multiple AI-generated shots and making Tokyo feel authentic rather than like a generic “cyber city” required many iterations and refinements.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I’m proud that people who watch it often say, “This feels like me in my city.” The film manages to feel intimate and relatable even though it’s AI-generated and almost entirely silent. That mix—of futuristic tools and very human feelings is the core win for this project.

What we learned

I learned how powerful silence can be when the visuals and rhythm do the talking, and how AI can be used not just for spectacle but for small, delicate emotions. It also taught me a lot about directing attention on screen—guiding the viewer’s eye between phone screens, city lights, and the almost-intersections of two lives.

What's next for The Algorithmic City

Next, I’d love to expand The Algorithmic City into an anthology different cities, different strangers, same theme of near-missed human connection in a digital age.
