Inspiration
We were inspired by the platformer game hollow knight where when you die a shade is created in your place that you can interact with.
What it does
Our game starts out with an alchemist in his old age in search of the elixir of life. The only way to gain the elixir is to sacrifice your memories of your past life to gain a new one. You must progress through five levels each level you get younger and “remember’ past abilities and mechanics. You also get faster and can jump higher each time you get younger. The obstacles include spikes, ice walls which you can use fireballs to get past, gates which need echos to stand on. There is a timer on each level and once you reach the end you gain the elixir of life. The game mechanics are better explained in the video uploaded below.
How we built it
We began with a github repo and used pygame but pygame glitched so we switched to html files that we each edited and pushed to the main file. We used claude code to create pixel art and work in animations and cutscenes as well as debug throughout the process.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was integrateing the pixel aret and cutscene animations as animations would play out of que. We also had multiple bugs regarding movement and ghost interaction as well as our walls and ice walls not stoping the player or responding to echo inputs.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of making our first platformer 2d game with a comprehensive storyline and intewractive features
What we learned
We learned that codeing is hard and that submitting projects is often harder then the project itself. We also learned how to integrate pixel art on html and work as a team to coordinate our work.
What's next for The Alchemists Debt
If we had more time we would add more levels, weapons to get and pvp which we didn’t have time to add with this iteration.
