Inspiration
The daily struggles of Thalassemia patients in India—especially the anxiety of finding timely blood donors, lack of seamless care, and limited awareness—motivated us to build a technology-driven, human-centered solution. Hearing stories from families supported by Blood Warriors, we realized how even a small innovation could save lives and bring comfort.
What it does
ThalAI Bridge is an AI-powered platform that:
- Predicts and matches available blood donors with Thalassemia patients in real-time
- Notifies all stakeholders (patients, donors, coordinators) instantly
- Provides gamified motivation to donors through badges and recognition
- Offers multilingual AI chatbot guidance for patients and families
- Centralizes secure health records and seamless provider communications
How we built it
- Used React Native for a cross-platform mobile interface.
- Built backend APIs with Node.js and integrated Firebase for real-time database and authentication.
- Developed a basic AI prediction model in Python (scikit-learn) to forecast donor eligibility based on mock historical donation data.
- Integrated Cloud Functions for automated notifications on new/matched blood requests.
- Designed gamified donor dashboard and multilingual chatbot UI in Figma.
Challenges we ran into
- Creating realistic AI predictions with limited (mock) data
- Ensuring good UX for users with varying tech literacy and language skills
- Designing end-to-end privacy and consent, even in a prototype
- Mocking integrations with e-RaktKosh and hospital data due to restricted access
- Making the platform accessible for low-connectivity areas
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Completed a functional MVP of patient-to-donor real-time matching using AI
- Built a cross-platform UI and notification system in less than 24 hours
- Implemented a working multilingual chatbot for Thalassemia FAQs
- Designed an intuitive gamification layer to improve donor retention
What we learned
- The value of bringing AI and social good together—small insights can save lives
- Practical approaches for privacy-by-design in healthcare platforms
- Importance of simple, clear workflows for non-technical users
- Quick MVP development in a high-stakes, time-bound hackathon setting
What's next for ThalAI Bridge
- Integrate real donation data and run pilots with Blood Warriors in major cities
- Partner with hospitals for onboarding and seamless transfusion tracking
- Enhance language/voice accessibility for rural outreach
- Open-source the platform for NGOs nationwide, expanding to support other rare blood disorders
