Inspiration
Every year, thousands of children in India are born with Thalassemia, and most struggle to find regular blood donors, trusted medical advice, and reliable support. Witnessing these challenges firsthand inspired us to create ThalCare: an accessible, AI-powered platform devoted to saving lives, empowering families, and building a strong support network.
What it does
ThalCare connects Thalassemia patients with suitable blood donors in real time using AI-driven matchmaking. It provides a multilingual educational hub, offers secure telemedicine consults, enables community support and engagement, and ensures robust data privacy. The platform integrates with leading national initiatives like e-RaktKosh for seamless, widespread impact.
How we built it
We built ThalCare as a mobile-first app using Flutter for cross-platform access and a Node.js backend for reliability and scalability. Our AI module forecasts donor availability and patient need for optimal matching, implemented using Python. We integrated third-party APIs for national blood databases and ensured end-to-end encryption for all sensitive communications. Iterative feedback from medical professionals and patients shaped the UI and feature set.
Challenges we ran into
Integrating with existing health infrastructure and ensuring data consistency. Designing for low-literacy users and supporting multiple Indian languages. Creating robust AI models despite sparse historical donor data. Ensuring uncompromised data privacy and security. Building user trust in a sensitive healthcare environment.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Seamless, real-time donor-patient matching using AI. Intuitive, clean interface validated by actual Thalassemia families. Secure telemedicine integration within the platform. Gamification features that increased donor retention in pilot tests. Strong partnerships initiated with leading patient support organizations.
What we learned
Technology alone isn’t enough—empathy, trust, and clear communication are just as important. Integrating with real-world health systems requires flexibility, patience, and local knowledge. Community, education, and recognition are powerful motivators for engagement and support.
What's next for ThalCare
Extend coverage and localize for more regional languages. Expand AI capability for even better forecasting and personalized interventions. Partner with more hospitals, NGOs, and governments for nationwide rollout. Add modules for financial aid, logistics, and advanced care planning. Gather ongoing user feedback to continuously improve and measure impact.
