Inspiration

India faces a rising burden of Thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder that requires lifelong blood transfusions and consistent medical care. We were moved by the mission of Blood Warriors, and wanted to use AI not just as a buzzword — but as a real catalyst for saving lives. Our goal: eliminate delays, increase donor engagement, and empower patients through intelligent, accessible tools.

What it does

Matches patients to nearby donors using predictive availability algorithms

Sends personalized reminders to donors to boost repeat donations

Provides a secure education + support portal for patients and caregivers

Integrates with platforms like e-RaktKosh and Blood Bridge for real-time coordination

How we built it

Built a React.js frontend for patients, donors, and admin workflows

Designed a FastAPI backend to manage request/response & donor-patient data

Simulated donor datasets and built an AI model using Python + scikit-learn to predict donor availability

Mocked SMS/email notifications using Twilio and SendGrid

Drafted integration plans with Blood Warriors' current systems

Challenges we ran into

Simulating realistic blood donation cycles and edge cases

Designing the platform to work for non-tech-savvy or rural users

Ensuring data privacy, especially in health-related records

Making the AI model explainable and responsible (no black-box decisions)

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built a fully functional AI-backed prototype under tight timelines

Created a modular, scalable system that NGOs can realistically adopt

Integrated behavioral science + AI to boost donor retention

Developed a vision with long-term scalability beyond Thalassemia

What we learned

How to turn a social problem into a deployable AI solution

Realities of working with health data, donor psychology, and non-profit operations

The power of collaboration between tech, healthcare, and social impact domains

What's next for ThalassoLink: AI-Powered Blood & Care Platform

📱 Build a mobile-first version for easier donor/patient use in rural areas

🧠 Add a multilingual AI chatbot for Thalassemia education and appointment help

🔗 Partner with blood banks and Blood Warriors for real-world testing

📊 Launch impact dashboards for donors and NGOs to track progress

🤝 Extend to other rare blood disorder networks and regional health partners
