Inspiration After volunteering at a Thalassemia center, I saw two heartbreaking patterns: 1.Parents begging for last-minute blood donors 2.Dedicated donors dropping out because "life got busy" This sparked the idea: What if donating blood improved your own health security?
What it does ThalassoCare is a system that connects blood donors, patients, and insurance providers through a credit-based reward system. Donors earn credits for each donation, which can be redeemed later for healthcare benefits like discounted insurance premiums. Patients benefit from a more consistent donor pool, and hospitals/blood banks get digitized donor history and engagement tools.
How we built it lightweight web portal and WhatsApp interface for both donors and patients. Tech Stack (planned): Backend: Node.js Blockchain (planned): Hyperledger Fabric for securely storing donation history Frontend: Next.js for admin dashboards, Twilio or WhatsApp Business API for donor interaction Identity: Aadhaar e-KYC (optional), or phone-based OTP auth Data: MongoDB + basic analytics using Python (Pandas)
Challenges we ran into 1.We don’t yet have access to real-time hospital data or blood bank APIs. 2.Integrating insurance requires regulatory approvals, which can’t be done within the hackathon timeline. 3.Building trust among users (donors/patients) will take time—it’s not just about the tech, but about how it's introduced.
Accomplishments that we're proud of While we haven’t launched anything yet, we’re proud of: 1.Identifying a clear gap that many digital health solutions haven’t tackled (the behavioral loop of donors) 2.For creating a working prototype that can simulate the credit-reward system 3.Mapping out a realistic and scalable roadmap—not just an idea, but a structure for how to build it
What we learned Trust matters more than tech: Donors needed physical ID cards, not just app tokens. Incentives play a major role in keeping blood donors consistent. Simpler, accessible tech (like WhatsApp) can have a bigger impact than complex apps. Building trust is just as important as building features. Clear communication is key — both for users and potential partners.
What's next for ThalassoCare We'd like to pilot a small-scale rollout with local clinics or blood camps (e.g., college drives), Continue developing the blockchain-based donor credit system, starting with basic identity and donation logging Approach insurance providers with mockups and small datasets to validate the reward model
