Inspiration

Thalassemia patients in India face overwhelming challenges—difficulty finding regular blood donors, high treatment costs, and lack of awareness. Witnessing families struggle for timely transfusions and support, especially in rural areas, inspired us to develop a unified tech-driven solution. We were particularly moved by the tireless work of Blood Warriors, and we wanted to build something that could scale their impact using AI, data, and empathy

What it does

AI-powered support system that connects Thalassemia patients with nearby eligible blood donors in real time. It predicts donor availability using past patterns, encourages repeat donations through gamification, and supports secure communication between patients and healthcare providers. The platform also educates users via multilingual, AI-curated health content and integrates with existing systems like e-RaktKosh and Blood Bridge.

How we built it

We used React for the frontend and Node.js with Express for the backend, storing data in MongoDB. For predictive donor modeling, we used Python (Scikit-learn) to build a basic behavioral model. We integrated Firebase for real-time notifications and GPT-4 for auto-generating educational content. Data security was handled using JWT, SSL, and OAuth2, and mock APIs simulated integration with e-RaktKosh

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was the lack of real donor datasets, which required us to simulate data for our ML models. Designing a platform that worked for both urban and rural users across different languages added complexity. Ensuring HIPAA-level security in limited time was demanding. Lastly, integrating government systems without access to real APIs required careful architectural design using mocks.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully built an end-to-end MVP that includes smart donor-patient matching, a working AI-based prediction engine, multilingual health education, and donor engagement features. We created an intuitive, accessible interface and laid out a clear roadmap for integration with existing health systems. Most importantly, we crafted a solution that’s human-centered, practical, and scalable

What we learned

We learned how to combine AI, healthcare design, and user empathy into a functioning system. This project deepened our understanding of data privacy in health tech, how to optimize real-time systems, and how to create inclusive experiences for a diverse user base. We also discovered the importance of designing around real-world constraints like limited access and trust issues.

What's next for Thalassemia Support System: A Technology-Driven Solution

We plan to pilot ThalaConnect with Blood Warriors in select cities and gather user feedback. Post-hackathon, we aim to improve our AI models using real donor data, implement voice assistant features in regional languages, and connect wearable health devices for high-risk patients. Our long-term goal is to deploy this solution nationally and offer it as an open platform for NGOs, hospitals, and government bodies
