💡 ThalaCare – An AI-Powered Lifeline for Thalassemia Support

🚀 Inspiration

Every three minutes, a child is born with Thalassemia in India, yet many suffer due to the unavailability of timely blood transfusions. Inspired by the mission of Blood Warriors, we wanted to solve the recurring challenge of finding reliable blood donors, while also supporting patients with education, care, and connection. We aimed to use AI not just for automation—but for empathy.

🧠 What it does

ThalaCare is a unified web and mobile platform that:

  • Connects Thalassemia patients with nearby, compatible blood donors in real-time
  • Uses AI to predict donor availability based on past behavior and donation frequency
  • Provides a gamified dashboard to encourage recurring donor participation
  • Offers patients a dashboard for care management, transfusion tracking, and medical education
  • Ensures data security and integrates with e-RaktKosh and Blood Bridge

🏗️ How we built it

  • Frontend: React.js for web, Flutter for mobile UI
  • Backend: Node.js with Express for API services
  • Database: Firebase for real-time features, PostgreSQL for health data
  • ML/AI: scikit-learn & Python for donor prediction
  • Security: OAuth2 authentication + AES encryption
  • Integrations: e-RaktKosh & Blood Bridge (mock APIs)

🧱 Challenges we ran into

  • Limited access to real donor data: We had to simulate a dataset to train our ML model
  • Ensuring data privacy: We built our system architecture to align with HIPAA-like standards
  • AI model bias: Early models were not generalizable; we iterated with more diverse simulated behavior
  • Complex workflows: Balancing patient, donor, and admin flows in one platform was UX intensive

🏅 Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Developed a functional AI-powered donor recommendation engine
  • Created a gamified donor tracker that increases engagement
  • Designed an accessible, multilingual user experience for both patients and donors
  • Integrated real-time alerts and a doctor-patient chat system in the MVP
  • Laid the groundwork for national-level integration via e-RaktKosh APIs

📚 What we learned

  • Empathy is as important as AI when building healthcare tools
  • Predictive analytics, when explained well, builds trust in donor-patient systems
  • Simple gamification (badges, milestones) can lead to sustained donor interest
  • Healthcare UI/UX must be minimal, clear, and multilingual

🔮 What's next for ThalaCare

  • Partnering with Blood Warriors for real-world pilot deployment
  • Collecting anonymized data to improve AI accuracy
  • Scaling to support other blood-related disorders
  • Integrating telemedicine, prescription reminders, and insurance support
  • Launching a volunteer platform for organizing blood donation drives across cities
