Inspiration

Every year, thousands of children in India are born with Thalassemia, a chronic blood disorder requiring lifelong transfusions. While advanced nations have integrated systems for rare blood diseases, India still faces:

1.Scattered blood donor networks

2.Delayed access during emergencies

3.Poor patient education

4.Communication breakdowns between caregivers and patients

We were deeply moved by stories from Blood Warriors, a support group for Thalassemia families. Their calls for timely donations and support inspired us to build Thala-Connect — a unified AI-powered platform to bridge these critical care gaps.

What it does

THALA-CONNECT is an AI-powered Web + Mobile platform designed to support Thalassemia patients, blood donors, and healthcare providers by offering a unified ecosystem for timely blood transfusions and better care coordination. Key Functionalities:

1. Real-Time Donor Matching Uses AI/ML to predict and notify the most likely available donors based on: Probability=f(donation frequency, last donation date, location, blood type) Sends smart notifications to eligible donors.

2. Live Donor Map Displays a geo-tagged map of active donors using data from e-RaktKosh and Blood Bridge. Patients can view nearby donors in real time.

3. Micro-Panic Button Emergency button alerts nearby donors and the closest hospital with patient details. Ideal for last-minute transfusion needs.

4. AI Chatbot Provides instant answers to common questions. Sends personalized reminders for hydration, supplements, and transfusions. Supports regional languages and voice prompts.

5. Secure Health Messaging Encrypted communication between patients, doctors, and caregivers. Built-in health journal for tracking transfusions and symptoms.

6. Donor Rewards & Gamification Tracks number of donations. Rewards regular donors with badges, leaderboards, and appreciation messages. Quizzes, flashcards, and mini-games on health and donation

7. Digital Transfusion Passport Generates digital transfusion records that can be downloaded and shared across hospitals. Automatically updates with every logged donation or hospital interaction.

How we built it

Our solution, Thala-Connect, is a Web + Mobile app designed to serve patients, donors, and doctors. We focused on creating a platform that is fast, intelligent, and secure.

Frontend-React.js (Web), Flutter (Mobile)

Backend -Node.js + Express

AI/ML Models-Python, Scikit-learn, TensorFlow (Donor Prediction, NLP Chatbot)

Database-MongoDB, Redis

Cloud & APIs - Microsoft Azure (Functions, Cosmos DB, Blob), Google Maps API, e-RaktKosh

Security - OAuth 2.0, JWT, AES Encryption

Challenges we ran into

  1. Sparse Blood Donation Data

  2. API Latency & Failures

  3. Low-Connectivity Support Many patients live in rural areas with limited access. We Enabled offline caching Optimized image and data payloads Built lightweight chat interfaces

  4. Real-Time Geolocation We needed to balance accuracy with battery/data use. Our fix: Update locations every t=5 min Use only when actively matching

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Thala-Connect enables life-saving interventions through AI-backed coordination. This platform can:

1.Reduce transfusion delays

2.Build donor retention through gamification

3.Empower patients with knowledge

4.Scale across other rare blood diseases

What we learned

During this project, we:

1.Understood the real-world complexities in transfusion medicine

2.Explored how predictive AI models can improve donor availability

3.Learned how to build for network-constrained and data-sensitive environments

4.Practiced using secure messaging, chatbots, and real-time geolocation in a healthcare context

5.Complied with principles of data privacy (DPDP Act & HIPAA)

What's next for THALA-CONNECT

As we move beyond the hackathon, our goal is to turn Thala-Connect into a scalable, real-world solution that transforms how thalassemia care is delivered. Here’s what’s on the horizon:

1.Pilot Program with NGOs & Hospitals Partner with organizations like Blood Warriors, Thalassemics India, and regional blood banks. Deploy the MVP in controlled settings to gather real feedback.

2.Advanced AI Model Training Expand datasets with anonymized real-world donation and patient records. Improve: Donor Matching Accuracy↑,Prediction Latency↓

3.Language & Accessibility Expansion Add regional language support and voice-based interfaces for low-literacy users. Build for offline-first mode to serve rural communities.

4.Genetic & Preventive Tools Introduce AI-driven genetic risk assessments for at-risk couples. Provide educational counseling via chatbot and partner clinics.

5.App Store & Play Store Release Launch mobile app on Android and iOS with a full-stack secure backend. Include features like biometric login, emergency sharing, and transfusion history.

6.Scale Beyond Thalassemia Generalize the platform to other chronic transfusion disorders like: Sickle Cell Anemia Hemophilia

Eventually evolve into a Universal Rare Blood Disorder Platform.
