Texture.io is an IoT device that translates and display text in braille in real time. This device aims to help decrease the high braille illiteracy rates by helping blind children to learn to read at a young age. Current devices are immensely costly and limited in the resources available. With texture.io, blind kids can read any children’s book regardless of the existence of a braille translated version. The Texture.io interface allows parents/teachers to upload any PDF and uses OCR to read and finally display the characters in braille one line at a time. It will do so on a handheld device through handmade solenoid braille displays. Texture.io also aims to enhance comprehension by voicing words as they are “read” through a button. It will also similarly achieve this by allowing kids to practice writing in braille on the device as words are read out loud.
