Inspiration
One of our close friends is originally from Texas and has family who are currently struggling right now. We wanted to create a way for everyone going through hardships and troubles in Texas to have one place they can find everything they need.
What it does
Texas Relief provides a one-stop hub for all things related to the disasters taking place in Texas. View local, real-time power outage updates or add a power outage onto the map wherever you are experiencing it. View real-time, update news articles related to the Texas events and add tags to refine your search. Engage in our online forum and connect with people who are going through similar hardships. Finally, search through our various, up-to-date links on where to donate towards Texas relief.
How we built it
We built a React web application using NodeJS as our server and utilized Bootstrap to help with grid-style layouts and general frontend formatting. Our user based power outage map uses the Google Maps API in order to pull locations and visualize markers on the map. Our real-time, updated news page pulls news from Microsoft Azure's Bing Search API.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our project in general. We were able to create a hub in 24 hours which has the potential to bring Texans together under a common cause. We also believe people can benefit tremendously from our project. Knowing if others around your are experiencing power outages can help you prepare for a sudden power outage. Being up to date with Texas-specific news and filtering out unimportant information can help keep people optimistic. Finally, being able to communicate with others who are experiencing the same trauma can benefit mental health.
What we learned
We learned to effectively distribute work and responsibility among team members. Only having 24 hours to built a functional product is a challenge when compared to longer hackathons. Although we struggled at first, we figured out what tasks to work on based on past experience and other skillsets.
What's next for Texas Relief
We hope to continue and update donation pages towards Texas Relief. We also hope to expand our project to cover general natural disasters. This way, people will always have a safe space during times of peril.
