Inspiration

Every one of us has seen someone change.

A friend becomes quieter. They stop showing up. They seem distant, different.

We notice it — but we don’t always act. Not because we don’t care, but because we don’t know how to help.

By the time we realize something is wrong, it may already be too late.

Mental health struggles and substance use don’t begin suddenly. They start quietly — through small emotional and behavioral changes that are often ignored.

We built TETHR to make those early signals visible — and to help people act before it’s too late.

What it does

TETHR is an early-warning system that detects emotional distress in youth and provides timely support before it escalates into a crisis.

It helps:

  • individuals understand their emotional state
  • detect early warning signs
  • provide coping support in real time
  • enable peers to step in safely and early

TETHR turns silent struggles into signals — and signals into action.

How we built it

For this hackathon, we focused on designing a clear and scalable concept for how TETHR would be built and function in a real-world setting.

We outlined the full system architecture and development approach, including:

designing the complete user flow (from mood input to intervention) creating UI mockups to simulate the app experience defining a rule-based model for initial emotional risk classification planning integration of AI/ML models for future pattern detection and personalization structuring intervention features like coping tools and peer support

From a technical perspective, we envision building TETHR using:

a mobile-first frontend (React Native or Flutter) a backend system (Node.js / Firebase) for data handling and real-time updates machine learning models for behavioral pattern recognition secure cloud infrastructure to ensure privacy and scalability

The system is designed to be lightweight, scalable, and adaptable, making it suitable for deployment in schools, communities, and low-resource environments.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was balancing complexity and clarity.

The idea behind TETHR involves emotional patterns, behavioral signals, and peer interaction, which can quickly become too complex to explain or demonstrate.

We had to simplify the system into something that:

  • is easy to understand
  • feels realistic
  • still delivers meaningful impact

Another challenge was designing a solution that is supportive without being intrusive, ensuring users feel safe and respected.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • transforming a complex behavioral idea into a clear, simple system
  • designing a solution that focuses on early intervention instead of crisis response
  • integrating peer support in a safe and practical way
  • creating a concept that is both impactful and feasible in real-world settings

What we learned

Through building TETHR, we learned that:

  • early intervention is more powerful than late response
  • simplicity is key when designing real-world solutions
  • peer awareness can play a major role in mental health support
  • technology should support human care — not replace it

What's next for TETHR

Future development of TETHR includes:

  • AI-based personalization for more accurate detection
  • SMS/offline support for low-connectivity environments
  • integration with schools and youth organizations
  • partnerships with NGOs and mental health initiatives

Our long-term goal is to make early mental health support accessible, scalable, and part of everyday life.
