Inspiration
We were frustrated by the need for complicated and (expensive) external cloud servers we don't need. We just wanted a simple solution to easily connect the whole team to the team MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers, without footing a bill, or worrying about approaching free tier limits. So we decided to make it!
What it does
Tether is a local-first desktop application that lets developers securely share their local MCP servers with teammates without relying on external clouds server.
How we built it
We created and packaged it using Electron with ReactJs. It is primarily written in TypeScript, and we implemented Tailscale to handle networking and tunnelling.
Challenges we ran into
We struggling during development because our planning phase was lacking, leading to a hard time dividing work efficiently, and causing delays and lulls. On the technical end, we struggling implementing tail scale to work effectively on Linux, Mac, and Windows.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are especially proud of the UI, and the clean simple functionality. It works efficiently, it looks and feels clean, and has analytics that give useful insight. We are happy that it handles many different use cases that any developer team would have.
What we learned
We learned how to work as a team cohesively. We all met each other at the Hackathon, and so it was so valuable to learn to rely on each others strengths in different aspects of full stack development. We also learned so much about Tailscale, networking, and non-centralized systems!
What's next for Tether
Build hope to build on our existing architecture and pivot from strictly client-server architecture and facilitate peer to peer as well! With more time we would improve our systems robustness and security, and make it especially reliable and scalable to medium to large teams.
