Inspiration

Most learning platforms focus on delivering information, but not on developing critical thinking. We wanted to build a system where users actively engage with ideas instead of passively consuming them. Debate is a proven method to improve reasoning and communication skills, but it is not easily accessible to everyone. Our goal was to create a platform where users can practice structured argumentation with the help of AI. This led to ThinkBattle AI, a system designed to simulate real debates and encourage users to think, respond, and refine their arguments in a structured way.

What it does

ThinkBattle AI is an AI-powered debate platform that allows users to participate in structured debates on various topics. The system generates counterarguments in real time and interacts with the user in a conversational format. At the end of each session, an evaluation module analyzes the responses based on logical consistency, clarity, and relevance. Users receive a score along with feedback. The platform also maintains a leaderboard to track performance over time. The main objective is to provide an interactive environment where users can improve their reasoning and communication skills through practice.

How we built it

The application is built using the MERN stack. The frontend is developed with React.js and styled using Tailwind CSS to provide a responsive user interface. The backend is implemented using Node.js and Express, which handles API requests and business logic. MongoDB is used for storing user data, debate sessions, and scores. For AI functionality, we integrated the Groq API to generate responses and evaluations. Different prompts are designed to simulate roles such as opponent and evaluator. The system processes user input, generates responses, and returns structured outputs in real time.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges was designing prompts that produce consistent and relevant responses. Ensuring that the AI maintains context throughout the debate required multiple iterations. Managing different roles, such as argument generation and evaluation, also added complexity. Another issue was handling response time to maintain a smooth interaction flow. We also faced problems related to API key management and learned to properly secure environment variables. Debugging integration issues between frontend and backend APIs was another key challenge during development.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully developed a complete AI-based debate system within a short time frame. The platform supports real-time interaction and structured evaluation of arguments. Integration of fast AI responses enabled a smooth user experience. We also implemented a scoring and leaderboard system to track user performance. The project demonstrates the practical use of AI in building interactive learning tools. Completing both frontend and backend integration along with AI functionality was a significant achievement for our team.

What we learned

This project helped us understand the importance of prompt design in AI-based applications. We gained experience in building and integrating a full-stack system using MERN. We also learned best practices for handling sensitive data such as API keys. Managing system performance and ensuring smooth interaction with AI services was another important learning. Overall, the project improved our understanding of how AI can be applied in real-world applications beyond simple query-response systems.

What's next for ThinkBattle AI

In the next phase, we plan to add support for user-to-user debates with AI-based evaluation. We also aim to improve the feedback system by providing more detailed analysis of arguments. Additional features such as voice input and performance tracking over time are planned. We are also considering deploying the platform for wider access and testing. The long-term goal is to develop ThinkBattle AI into a scalable system that can be used for learning and skill development in educational environments.
