Inspiration
Physicians save lives. I am not a physician, but I wanted to contribute through something I could build: helping them keep learning. I think that making medical knowledge easier to practise can help someone prepare to care for another person, and that feels like a worthwhile way to help.
That way I conceived the idea of generating a small daily habit that medical students and doctors could start for free, without buying a course or committing to a long session. That became Testae: three questions, clear explanations, and a reason to return tomorrow: more questions and a ranking.
What it does
Testae is an app aiming to help physicians to refresh their knowledge in the fastest and more engaging possible way, so they keep learning and solidifying their skills day after day. Every day they receive 3 multiple choice test questions with a comprehensive explanation of the right solution, for those who want to practice more, they have the option to go Premium and practice in an unlimited way.
The users who completed the 3 daily questions participate in a global ranking that nudges them to come tomorrow and prove who is the best, day after day.
How we built it
The app leverages a general Flutter scaffolding to build mobile apps on top of which are built the features related to our product. On the other end, a Supabase instance provides all the backend capabilites needed except for FCM which is provided by Firebase. Most of the code has been generated using Codex, Cursor, and Claude code. Nonetheless, always keeping an eye on the code and the architecture to make sure the AI doesn´t get off the rails easily.
Challenges we ran into
On a first iteration, I tried to build the whole app by letting AI creating issues and implement them in a YOLO way. It didn´t work, the AI made so much inference of unneeded features or over engineered those that were right.
I had to trash everything and start from scratch becuase it seemed easier that trying to steer that sinking ship, xD.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Making the full app and server ready in 2 weeks plus getting it approved on the Play Store in 24 hours I feel is incredibly amazing. I think my first app it took me about 6 months and like 3 weeks to get approved afterwards.
What we learned
Mostly about to understand how much space and autonomy you can give to AI. So, I feel if the tasks are well specified and you have enough of them you can let the AI work all night, but if you don´t supervise the US, the issues, tickets, etc... a lot of noise is added to your project and deviates from a maintainable project faster than you thought.
What's next for Testae
It´s just started!! I´m iterating daily. I need to understand the users behaviors, their opinion about the product; icon, images, design, has to be improved... onboarding... The next for Testae, is more of Testae basically.
