Inspiration

The inspiration to create a website dedicated to making women's health resources accessible stemmed from a deep-seated belief in the importance of women's well-being and empowerment. Recognizing the numerous challenges women face in accessing reliable and comprehensive healthcare information, I felt compelled to bridge the gap. The goal of this website is to empower women by providing a centralized platform where they can easily access a wide range of resources, including articles, expert advice, and community support. By promoting awareness, education, and inclusivity, the website aims to foster a healthier and more informed society, where women can take charge of their health and make informed decisions with confidence.

What it does

ORA recommends the best doctors and clinics in your area based on what service you're looking for and the reviews. It features a map that also helps you scale it based on location. ORA also has a dedicated news section that includes news articles about women and their stories. Finally, ORA provides you with discount codes to access feminine products and resources.

How we built it

We used several different APIs like Yelp Fusion, leaflet.js, and NewsAPI to incorporate the most updated data. We used CSS and HTML to work on the front end and then used Flask and Python to fill in the missing parts in the backend code.

Challenges we ran into

We had a lot of trouble figuring out how the get the APIs we used to work on the browser when we were hosting the site online. Some of the APIs like the NewsAPI had a paywall that didn't allow it to be called via a browser, so we had trouble figuring out how to make it populate when the website was deployed.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to create and program so much of the code in the short amount of time we had. We are also proud that our whole team was able to contribute and create a project that was meaningful and important to us. We got the Yelp API and the leaflet.js to work together to create a mapping feature, which we had no experience with, so that was another victory in our books!

What we learned

We learned that APIs can be very difficult to work with, but very fulfilling at the end of the day. We also learned about deployment and the integration of backend and frontend code into the website that's hosted online.

What's next for ORA

Currently, the scale of ORA is just Irvine as we had to manually find locations to populate the data, if given the time and resources, we would love to scale it to the whole country to help those in unsafe areas find reproductive resources around them. With women's rights becoming a more pressing issue, we want to be able to have as many people access ORA as we can.
