Inspiration

Growing Pain In a world flooded with tools and courses, many people still don't know what's actually relevant and how to translate it to their work or career. They feel lost and alone.

While studying at business school at Berkeley Haas, I discovered an important insight for working professionals: excellent knowledge is important, but the value comes only when it's applied to one's situation successfully. Just like in soccer, knowing how to score is different than practicing till you get it in the goal.

At the same time, I have knowledge and experience in product management, but I have no way of sharing my learnings with individuals who can take away and make valuable things with it. I noticed working professionals have core skillsets and a wide range of skillset they have developed and tested. What's considered mundane in one's toolbox can be a treasure in another's toolbox.

There's nothing easily accessible that helps working professionals understand the context, relevancy and benefit of a skillset to their field, their role or their career. On top of that, there's not that much opportunity to practice, if they haven't already been doing it in their role. And this is the part that's super valuable for working professionals.

For example: If I'm a product manager in B2B software, and I want to know how vibe coding can be valuable for me, I really don't know how it translates to my work and life before I spend hours. However, if I talk to someone who has done it, I can inquire about relevance and value, discovering that it's actually not the same as coding. I can actually practice making a page, even if it's a front-end I can use in 5% of my job.

As a product manager and VP of Careers at Berkeley Haas, I noticed software can help with this problem. That's why I'm building Skilltree: a skills-sharing platform that helps working professionals find the right mentors and peer trainers to help them with relevance and practice. Working professionals can join communities, hosted by companies and organizations. This would speed up learning curve for people, allowing them to gain new and relevant skills quicker.

On the Skilltree platform, people can book bite size sessions (30-60 mins) with a community designated mentor or peer trainer using points or earn points by training someone else in a skill they know.

It's not just watching a course, it's discovering the value of skillsets and practicing them. Let's not get stuck on the learning hamster wheel.

What it does

Skilltree is a skillsharing platform for professionals and companies. It helps working professionals gain new skills, by talking to mentors or trainers, and working through examples. Learners join communities created by companies, to speed up the learning curve on products.

How we built it

Powered by Bolt.new, the most powerful app development tool.

Challenge qualification:

  • Built with supabase in the backend.
  • deployed with custom domain: skilltreenow.org
  • deployed with netify
  • youtube video used ElevenLabs for the audio.

Features and functionalities:

  • landing page: search, filter and browse through skill cards.
  • login with google, Github, or created account.
  • Book Session page, calendar invite with google meet link download, confirmation page.
  • Book session page: points is deducted from account, go into holding after session is booked.
  • list skill page: trainer information and skill description.

Challenges I ran into

I was very excited to work on bolt and got a team together to work on this. However, I encountered various of team formation and storming challenges. Two of my teammates got sick and couldn't work on it. In the end, I ended up creating most of the app on my own. Thank goodness for how powerful bolt.new is and my experience in software, could not have made it this far without this amazing product.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Built a deployed app with full frontend and backend, and do customer interviews, mostly on my own. Is this crazy? Is the law of the universe being bent right now?

What I've learned

It's really difficult to find suitable teammates and get on the same page.

What's next for Skilltree

Get reactions from potential customers and communities.
