Inspiration

As a developer who frequently travels internationally, I've experienced firsthand the stress of managing travel documents and health certificates. The frustration of realizing your vaccination record isn't properly formatted for a specific country, or discovering at the last minute that your insurance doesn't meet entry requirements – these are problems that affect millions of travelers. When I saw DocuSign's Hackathon challenge, I immediately saw an opportunity to solve this real-world problem thinking out of the box and possibility of it becoming real.

What it does

Healthpass streamlines the entire travel documentation process using DocuSign's powerful ecosystem. Here's how it works:

  • Travelers log in through our portal using DocuSign OAuth, ensuring secure authentication and user verification
  • After selecting their destination, my Maestro workflow automatically generates a checklist of required health and travel documents for that specific country
  • Through DocuSign Web Forms, travelers input their travel details in a structured, easy-to-validate format
  • Using DocuSign's eSignature API, travelers upload and sign their health documents (vaccination records, insurance papers, etc.)
  • Officials who can approve, will receive an email to review the signed documents and they can approve/reject the application
  • A webex meeting will be setup between traveller and approver for verification through our custom ** Webex Extension **
  • If approved, the traveller will receive an approval email with a QR code
  • Immigration officers can scan the QR codes for instant verification

How we built it

Healthpass was built my by integrating multiple DocuSign technologies to create a seamless travel documentation system. The Web Forms API powers our dynamic travel declaration forms. We use the eSignature API and Connect Webhooks for real-time status updates. The Click API manages terms acceptance. All these are carried out in Docusign Workflow. Additionally, we created a custom extension integrating with Webex to facilitate verification meetings between travelers and approvers when needed.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was wrapping my head around all the new DocuSign technologies in such a short timeframe. Between Web Forms, Connect webhooks, and extension apps - there was a lot to learn and integrate. I spent quite a few late nights reading documentation and debugging, but seeing it all come together made it worth it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Honestly, I'm just stoked I could pull off a working solution in such a tight timeline. When I first sketched out the idea, it seemed pretty ambitious - but I managed to get all the pieces talking to each other. Seeing that first successful flow from user login through to the QR code generation was a real high point for me.

What we learned

This hackathon was like a crash course in DocuSign's ecosystem. Before this, I thought DocuSign was just for signing documents - but wow, was I wrong. I got hands-on experience with their entire suite of tools, from Web Forms to Connect webhooks. It really opened my eyes to what's possible with modern document workflows.

What's next for Healthpass

You know what? I'm still catching my breath from building this thing! I came up with what I thought was a cool idea and just went for it. The core functionality is there and it works - if people find it useful, maybe I'll add more features. For now, I'm just happy I could create something that might make international travel a bit easier for folks.
