Track : Vibe Coding for Social Impact Challenge
Inspiration
The inspiration for MangroveMatrix came from witnessing the alarming rate of mangrove deforestation worldwide - we're losing 1-2% of these critical ecosystems annually. Mangroves are nature's unsung heroes, sequestering up to 4x more carbon than terrestrial forests while protecting 15 million people from flooding annually. Yet, traditional conservation funding is slow, opaque, and disconnected from real-time environmental data.
We were inspired by the potential of blockchain technology to create direct, transparent funding channels for environmental conservation. By combining AI-powered health predictions with decentralized finance, we envisioned a platform where anyone, anywhere, could directly fund and track the restoration of specific mangrove regions while earning carbon credits for their contributions.
What it does
MangroveMatrix is a decentralized platform that revolutionizes mangrove conservation funding through:
🌍 Interactive 3D Globe Visualization: Users explore mangrove regions worldwide on an immersive 3D Earth, with real-time environmental data overlays showing health scores, carbon sequestration rates, and biodiversity indices.
🤖 AI-Powered Health Predictions: Our machine learning models analyze satellite imagery, water quality data, and climate patterns to predict mangrove health metrics, helping funders make data-driven decisions about where their contributions will have the most impact.
💰 Direct USDC Staking: Users can stake USDC directly to specific mangrove regions, with smart contracts ensuring transparent fund allocation to verified restoration projects. No intermediaries, no hidden fees - just direct environmental impact.
🌱 Carbon Credit Generation: Contributors automatically earn tokenized carbon credits (CC tokens) proportional to their stake and the carbon sequestration potential of their chosen region, creating a tangible return on environmental investment.
📊 Real-Time Impact Tracking: Live dashboards show the environmental impact of contributions, including CO2 sequestered, coastal area protected, and biodiversity supported.
How we built it
Frontend Architecture:
- Built with React + TypeScript for type-safe, maintainable code
- Vite for lightning-fast development and optimized production builds
- TailwindCSS + shadcn/ui for a beautiful, responsive interface
- MapBox GL JS with custom 3D globe projection for immersive visualization
Smart Contract Infrastructure:
- Solidity smart contracts deployed on OP Sepolia for gas-efficient transactions
- USDC integration for stable, accessible funding
- Automated carbon credit minting based on staking amounts and regional metrics
AI/ML Pipeline:
- Python-based ML models analyzing satellite data for health predictions
- Environmental metrics calculated from multiple data sources
- Efficient data processing with vector tiles for 2.2GB+ geospatial datasets
Development Process:
- Started with extensive research on mangrove ecosystems and existing conservation challenges
- Designed the UI/UX with focus on accessibility and engagement
- Implemented the 3D globe visualization with optimized rendering for smooth performance
- Developed smart contracts with comprehensive testing on testnet
- Integrated mock wallet functionality for seamless demo experience
- Built AI prediction models using historical environmental data
Challenges we ran into
🗺️ Geospatial Data Processing: Converting 2.2GB of mangrove habitat shapefiles into efficient vector tiles required implementing Tippecanoe in Google Colab and optimizing for web delivery without losing critical detail.
🌐 3D Visualization Performance: Rendering thousands of mangrove polygons on a 3D globe while maintaining 60fps required careful optimization, including dynamic level-of-detail rendering and efficient WebGL usage.
🔗 Blockchain Integration: Balancing the need for real blockchain functionality with demo accessibility led us to implement a dual system supporting both actual Web3 wallets and a mock wallet for demonstrations.
📊 AI Model Accuracy: Training models to predict mangrove health from limited historical data required creative feature engineering and ensemble methods to achieve reliable predictions.
⚡ Real-time Updates: Implementing live environmental data updates without overwhelming the blockchain with transactions required a hybrid on-chain/off-chain architecture.
