Inspiration
The inspiration for NutriDash comes from the desire to combine the excitement and engagement of endless runner games with a meaningful message about healthy eating. By integrating the concept of avoiding unhealthy foods and collecting healthy ones, the game aims to subtly educate players about nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices, while engaging the players in a fun, action-packed experience.
What it does
In NutriDash players control a character who runs through various environments, dodging unhealthy foods like sweets, fast food, and sodas. The objective is to collect healthy food items, like fruits, vegetables, and grains, which score points. The game's mechanics encourage quick reflexes and decision-making, mirroring the real-life choices we make in our diets.
How we built it
The game was developed using Scratch and micro:bit, tools known for their accessibility and educational value. Our project leveraged Scratch's intuitive drag-and-drop interface to animate the gameplay and micro:bit's interactive hardware capabilities for physical engagement. The design emphasized user-friendly navigation, captivating visuals, and scalable challenges to engage a diverse audience of players.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing educational content with engaging gameplay was a significant challenge. Ensuring the game was fun without being preachy about healthy eating required careful design and testing. Technical challenges included optimizing the game for various devices and creating an adaptive difficulty level that could cater to everyone.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are particularly proud of creating a game that is not only entertaining but also serves an educational purpose. The positive feedback from players who found the game helpful in making better food choices in real life has been incredibly rewarding. Additionally, the game's ability to appeal to a wide audience, regardless of age or gaming experience, stands as a testament to its accessibility and universal appeal.
What we learned
This project taught us the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration - combining skills in gaming, education, and nutrition led to a more impactful product. We learned that educational content can be effectively integrated into games to create an engaging and informative experience. The development process also provided insights into user behavior and preferences in mobile gaming.
What's next for NutriDash
The future plans for NutriDash include expanding the game with more levels, diverse environments, and additional healthy food options. We are also exploring partnerships with educational institutions and health organizations to use the game as a tool for promoting healthy eating habits among children and teenagers. Additionally, we're looking into incorporating more interactive educational content, possibly through mini-games or quizzes integrated into the gameplay.
