Inspiration

The online world can be incredibly isolating. We wanted to create a website that allowed members to unite community members in cultivating positive content. We drew inspiration from the modern day bullet journal but added places for friends and family to add support and notes of joy.

What it does

Meliora is a site meant for people to reflect on the positive parts of their day and boost their mood. It has a status and mood tracker section at the top. Below that the grid has a song of the day (linked to the picture), a happy picture of the day, a word of the day (for the purpose of the demo, meliora!), and an activity of the week. Finally, there is a gratitude-journal-like section for the users to reflect of their day and find the best parts. Music, happy pictures, hobbies, and practicing gratitude are all proven to improve mood and help people live happier lifestyles, so through Meliora, we wanted to help people be happier and, like the definition of the word, pursue being better.

STATUS BAR: allows users to save a status for themselves. MOOD BUTTONS: users can rank their mood levels for the week. HAPPY GRID: Displays Spotify links, pretty pictures, activities of the week, and the word of the day. SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR DAY: users are encouraged to write daily notes about what they are grateful for. NOTES OF JOY: other users can edit the notes and then the owner can drag them around their page.

How I built it

Used CSS, JavaScript, and HTML to program this website and ran it through repl.it.

Challenges I ran into

A huge challenge was learning how to link the domains. We did not know how to get our repl.it to show up at www.meliora.space. Thankfully, a mentor from MLH helped us. We used cloudflare to finally link them. We also had a few challenges along the way like trying to program the buttons and overlay to function properly, but through trial and error we were able to figure them out.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Some accomplishments that we're proud of are making all the buttons function properly, learning how to round the boxes and format nicely, and overall, finishing our website! Though the overlay button was a bit of a struggle at first and we ran into other minor issues along the way, once we learned how to make everything work, we were proud of what we were able to create.

What I learned

We learned how to point CNAMES so that the domain was linked. We also got more practice in using Java, HTML, and CSS.

What's next for Meliora

For the future, we want to make Meliora a community site where people can add happy, encouraging comments to other people's daily entries, and the daily positive entries compile to make a whole community forum. Members of the community would be able to see other people's statuses and add their own words of the days and entries. We'd also like to add a goals section for users to be able to list and strive toward their goals with the option for other users to encourage them.
