Inspiration

We were inspired by Quizlet, a flash card making website that helped us and thousands of other students study for our tests. In Quizlet, students could easily create and manage flash card sets. Additionally, it had a variety of interactive games that you could use with flash card sets that you could play. We often found ourselves competing with others to see who could get the highest score or fastest clear time on these various games.

What it does

Our project allows students to easily create flashcard study sets and then help them review the study sets by offering an interactive gameplay experience.

How we built it

We built this project in an IDE called IntelliJ, and used Github to store our code. Additionally, we had to look through many Youtube tutorials to figure out how to get a game window to pop up. We mainly imported many different Java classes to make our program output a game window.

Challenges we ran into

Sometimes it was frustrating when our game did not render the way we wanted it to render. We also did not make the code too organized, which became frustrating when errors popped up.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Overall, we’re proud of our time management and teamwork. There were no defined roles in our group, since each of us acted as a developer, designer, and manager at some point. We were also able to achieve most of our goals for the game over the two-day period.

What we learned

By making this game, we learned how to code quickly and effectively in java, and we also had to learn to use IntelliJ IDEA. Additionally, our game required animations and graphics, so we each had to familiarize ourselves with making sprite sheets and pixel art.

What's next for Study Dungeon

Next, we can expand our game by adding even more cosmetics items and enemies, to make our game even more enjoyable and increase students’ motivation for studying. Furthermore, we will use a database to store each user’s flashcards and game statistics, in order to open our game to a much wider audience.
