Inspiration
Seeing how there is so much information that news channels and articles give, it is very hard to compile all that information to someone who doesn't understand the factors that cause you to get COVID-19. So we decided to make it easier for the user to understand, by feeding them the most important factors as well as a quick prediction-based (by weather and traffic congestion) corona risk factor that tells the user what's their chance of contracting the virus.
What it does
This web application's purpose is to give an analysis of whether the user is safe or not to go outside. We do this by taking the location which allows the user to track the traffic and overall congestion around their area, their age, data of any of their immune deficiencies, and weather conditions in their area.
How we built it
We built it using persistence and hard work! The languages we chose to integrate together were HTML5, CSS, and Javascript. These 3 languages are very good when it comes to web development, and the possibilities are endless. We all chose a task to tackle, whether it be implementing an API using Javascript, or building the front end of the website using HTML and CSS.
Challenges we ran into
The challenges that we ran into were API integration, and communication online. For API integration, it was tough following each different API and figuring out how to access the information they had to offer, especially since each one had different steps and syntax. For communication online, it was a challenge at some points because we would all be working on the code simultaneously, but then one person's edits would overwrite the work someone else had just uploaded to the document.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are most proud of the various API's that we utilized in this project considering this was our first experience utilizing API's. We worked as a team and made our project work in the end and it's functionality exceeded our expectations when planning this idea from the beginning.
What we learned
We learned how to utilize API's in our project such as the Weather API and Google Maps API. We also got to experience and learn teamwork practices, perseverance, leadership, and willingness to learn new concepts in a project
What's next for CoronaCast
The next steps for CoronaCast is to move to the mobile platform. In this day and age, everyone has access to a mobile phone, and when we are on the go, that is the go to technology we all use. Whether it be creating an android/IOS based application, or making our website mobile-friendly, that is the direction we would like to take it. Also, we would love to either create, or integrate a news API to better inform the users of the application about COVID-19, and the current news that is happening with it
