Inspiration

Students today have access to countless learning materials but these resources are often scattered across PDF, lecture recordings, screenshots and personal notes. This creates a fragmented learning experience where students spend more time organising information than actually understanding it.

We created StudyNova to transform traditional studying into an intelligent and personalised learning experience by combining AI assistance with thoughtful mobile design.

Our goal was to build a learning companion that does not replace students' learning process but enhances it by helping them understand, revise and interact with their study materials more effectively.

What it does

StudyNova is an AI-powered learning companion designed to help students learn smarter and more efficiently.

Students can:

• Upload PDF and learning materials
• Generate AI-powered summaries
• Automatically create flashcards for revision
• Ask questions through AI TalkBack, an interactive AI learning assistant
• Record lectures and transform them into useful study resources
• Track learning progress through Study Canvas

StudyNova focuses on creating a personalised learning experience through:

• English and Bahasa Melayu language support
• Light and dark theme customisation
• A clean and student-friendly interface

Instead of using separate tools for notes, summaries, revision and learning assistance, StudyNova brings these experiences together into one integrated learning platform.

How we built it

We focused on combining AI functionality with user-centred design principles. The app experience follows a simple learning journey:

Learn > Understand > Practice > Review

We designed each feature around how students naturally study:

• Learn: Upload learning materials and record lectures
• Understand: Use AI summaries and AI TalkBack to clarify concepts
• Practice: Generate flashcards for active revision
• Review: Monitor progress through Study Canvas

The application was built with:

• Customisable themes and language settings

Beyond technical implementation, we focused on creating a polished mobile experience through intuitive navigation, clear information hierarchy and personalised interactions. Our design goal was to make AI feel approachable, simple and useful for everyday students rather than overwhelming.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was balancing powerful AI features with a simple and intuitive interface. Many AI applications can feel complicated or overwhelming, especially for students who only need quick assistance during studying. We focused on reducing unnecessary complexity and creating a natural interaction flow.

Another challenge was designing an environment suitable for long study sessions. Since students spend many hours using learning applications, we considered visual comfort and personal preferences by introducing theme customisation, language options and a clean navigation structure.
