Inspiration
The inspiration for this project came from a growing awareness of climate change and a desire to empower individuals to take action in their daily lives. Through conversations with friends and family, I noticed a common frustration: many wanted to live more sustainably but felt overwhelmed by the complexities of tracking their carbon footprints. This realization sparked the idea for an app that simplifies this process and provides users with the tools to make a difference.
What It Does
The app helps users track their CO2 emissions by logging daily activities such as transportation, energy use, and waste output. It provides personalized insights and tips for reducing emissions, along with visualizations that show progress over time. Additionally, the app fosters a community aspect, allowing users to share their journeys, challenges, and successes.
How We Built It
We built the app using a combination of React Native for cross-platform compatibility and a backend powered by Python and Flask for data management. The development process involved extensive research on carbon emissions, user experience design, and community engagement strategies. Collaborating with environmental experts helped ensure that our emissions calculations and tips were accurate and effective.
Challenges We Ran Into
One of the biggest challenges was balancing the complexity of accurate emissions tracking with user-friendly design. Ensuring the app was engaging and easy to navigate required multiple iterations and user testing. Additionally, integrating real-time data and maintaining performance across different devices presented technical hurdles that we had to overcome.
What We Learned
Throughout the development process, we learned the importance of team communication and iterative design. Engaging potential users early on helped us identify key features and pain points. We also gained a deeper understanding of sustainability issues and the significant impact of individual choices on carbon emissions.
What's Next for TerraPulse
Looking ahead, we plan to expand the app's features by incorporating gamification elements to encourage user engagement further. We also aim to collaborate with local businesses and organizations to provide users with incentives for reducing their emissions. Ultimately, our goal is to scale the app's reach and impact, helping more individuals on their journey toward sustainability.
