Inspiration

Urban living is the heartbeat of our future, but also where sustainability challenges are most pressing. We wanted to design a tool that makes carbon awareness fun, achievable, and relevant to everyday city life.

What it does

Terrago gamifies carbon footprint tracking for households.

  • Users input simple lifestyle details (cars, diet, solar, etc.).
  • The app calculates their estimated footprint.
  • It then suggests small, personalized actions (e.g., swap one car trip for a walk, try a veggie meal) that add up to meaningful urban impact.

How we built it

  • Frontend: Flutter for cross-platform speed and a clean mobile experience.
  • Backend: Go Fiber server + Supabase for quick auth and data storage.
  • Logic: A transparent carbon calculator built from fixed factors and pseudocode for consistency.
  • Design: Playful UI/UX and gamification elements to make sustainability engaging.

Challenges we ran into

  • Balancing simplicity with scientific accuracy in footprint calculations.
  • Integrating datasets (e.g., city emissions) without overwhelming users.
  • Hackathon crunch: merging design + code quickly while avoiding feature creep.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

  • Built a functional end-to-end pipeline (input → carbon estimate → actionable steps).
  • Designed a gamified approach that makes climate action less intimidating.
  • Collaborated seamlessly across development, design, and research under 24h pressure.

What we learned

  • Gamification boosts engagement, even for “serious” topics like carbon emissions.
  • Small, achievable actions can be just as powerful as large-scale changes when scaled across communities.
  • Teamwork and rapid prototyping matter more than perfection in hackathons.

What’s next for Terrago

  • Hyperlocal insights: Incorporate open city datasets to tailor footprints by suburb.
  • Enhanced gamification: Add challenges, streaks, and community leaderboards.
  • Mobile pilot: Deploy Terrago on campus for live testing with students.
  • Partnerships: Collaborate with councils and sustainability groups to scale impact across urban communities.
