Inspiration
Kids are engaged with pixelated video games! We wondered how we could use this interest for good, and decided to develop an interactive game. Our motivation was to raise awareness for environmental issues. We hope to help children understand why things like pollution, habitat loss, and invasive species are detrimental to the environment.
What it does
The game simulates a simplified environment to show its interconnected nature. User creates a combination of plants, herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores to create a sustainable ecosystem Goal: to create a stable ecosystem that supports lettuce, rabbits, wolves, and bears The plants and animals must keep each other alive without using all of the oxygen and water link
How we built it
Game was built with Java, specifically the Greenfoot library for the graphics and animations. Website was built with html, css, and javascript. To get the game on the website, we used the Greenfoot developer website, uploaded the script, and generated a tag to embed it in the site.
Challenges we ran into
Game-Wise
- Making pauses within the java script
- having the order of actions properly execute -certain key functions Website-Wise -Smooth, clean and effective design.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
-Our first Hackathon! -Time budgeting (finishing!) -Create many of our own graphics -Figuring out how to put all the pieces together at the end
What we learned
-Working with many people in a time-sensitive environment -Graphics and animations
What's next for TerraBound
-Implement a way to save scores, share scores, and more. -Smooth out animations within the game. -Increase continuity of graphics and colors between different aspects of the project -Add further real world connections
