Inspiration
Every year, hundreds of millions of people across the world are impacted by natural disasters. Many find themselves asking the same question: "How can I help?"
We were asked to change the world - we looked outward, and developed software to help others do precisely that in their own communities and beyond.
What it does
Terra, named after the goddess of nature, or, "Mother Earth," seeks to connect humanitarian organizations with volunteers who are eager to lend a hand to communities impacted by tragedy. Organizations can post volunteer openings and our site facilitates the rest.
How we built it
Our team found that a front-end technology stack was effective in developing our project. We used html, css, and javascript to construct our web platform, and experimented with firebase and MongoDB to create our database systems.
Challenges we ran into
We were not able to implement a database within the timeframe provided, as intended in our original design.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
None of us came into this hackathon with easily workable knowledge of any applicable programming languages. Rather than be discouraged, we viewed this as an opportunity to challenge ourselves and learn new skills by making a meaningful program. We taught ourselves new technologies (literally) overnight and integrated them into a purposeful project concept.
We are proud of the entire project for this reason - it is a reflection of our adaptability, hard work, and ability to have fun even in unfamiliar territory.
What's next for Terra
We hope to continue developing Terra in ways that will best empower volunteers, humanitarian organizations, and vulnerable communities to connect through high-impact service interactions.
