Inspiration
Everyone talks about driving less cars and turning off lights. What about eating less beef? Is beef the only food that contributes to climate change? What do we know of the foods we see at the supermarket?
What it does
Terra is a website that carries information about different food products and how their production and distribution, in general, contribute to climate change. It allows you to scan food items by taking photos of them, and the site will then provide a report on how large its carbon footprint is. Scanning food products at checkout with your phone allows you to keep track of how your purchases contribute to climate change, and you can compete with friends to see who's more eco-friendly on the leaderboard.
How I built it
I built it using HTML, and some CSS for the colors of the scan results page. The full site would allow natural language processing with voice command so they're asking "beef?" instead of scanning so it's easier for the elderly to use their devices.
Challenges I ran into
I ran into challenges learning how to use HTML and CSS. I also had trouble using platforms like GitHub and Replit together. Another issue is the design aspect, and functionality of the site, there's none.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I learned how to code an HTML page in the last 24 hours, and was able to apply my knowledge to code my first site. I've never coded before.
What I learned
I learned how to use some HTML, and that CSS was used with HTML for design. I learned how to take hex codes of colors to use them. I also learned how to run code for trial and error experiences.
What's next for Terra
Terra should be moved to an app, and perhaps expanded so that cashiers can operate Terra while customers are paying, so the company can also move towards decreasing the ecological footprint. It could also give other information like water consumption (coke companies use a lot) and not biodegradable items/landfill output when producing products!
