Brief

Inspiration 💡

Climate change is a problem that has been going on for decades. There is never any good news about it. As climate change continues to worsen, dangerous weather events are becoming more frequent, and ocean levels begin to rise. Large companies and corporations from all over the world are contributing to more than 70% of global emissions. Analyzing this, the team became inspired to decrease emissions by providing companies with calculations based on statistics. Our goal is to inform industries of their global carbon footprint in hopes of recognition and correction.

What it does 💻

Terra is a web-based application that allows users from all over the world to input company statistics and calculate their carbon footprint. Users are asked to provide statistics such as electrical energy consumption, gasoline consumption, and waste production. Using these three core stats, we can calculate the user's carbon footprint.

How we built it 🛠

We used Figma to design the prototype of the web page. We used HTML and CSS to design the front end of the website and Python with the Tkinter graphic user interface library to make our project functional.

Our Takeaways

Challenges we ran into 😤

Timezones were a challenge for us. Three of the four-team members are from Canada whereas the fourth member is from the UK. Our daytime hours did not coincide well.
The three members from Canada had never attended a hackathon before. This was extremely difficult as we were inexperienced.
Two of the members had zero knowledge of web development. This was extremely difficult as we lacked the necessary skills for our project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of 🙂

We are proud of our work. We created a web-based application that not only provides data but ultimately saves lives.
The green theme of the web inspires an overall message we are trying to convey.
We were able to implement programming and calculations to provide users with calculated information based on real data.

What we learned 📔

We learned how to use GUIs such as Tkinter.
We learned how to collaborate efficiently and work well with the skills each individual brings.
Some members learned front-end development using HTML and CSS.

What's next for Terra? 🔜

We would like to implement an automatic notification system that provides users with information on their carbon footprint. This will further allow companies to redesign and implement new solutions to decrease their carbon emissions.

Furthermore, we would also like to provide users with financial insight on how decreasing carbon emissions could increase profit. For example, if we notice a company is emitting a substantial amount of greenhouse gases via a large energy consumption, we can refer the company to invest in greener solutions such as solar panels to increase their profit.

We would also like to improve the website and make it more visually appealing.

Using Figma, I designed the prototype website - the pictures, text, colour scheme, buttons, different pages, and the overall layout and structure. I also came up with Terra's name, formed our action oriented report, and organized our general main principles with the help of input from my team. I worked on the front-end part of Terra, utilizing HTML and CSS to help make the prototype website into reality - the majority of my web-design work was focused on formatting text, pictures, and navigating the different pages. In regard to the presentation aspect of Terra, I collaborated with a fellow teammate to write the script and create a video demo of our project. I also helped with implementing the formulas for the Carbon emission calculations using Python.

This was my first hackathon, and I learned many things, worked for over 24 hours, persevered through the errors that came along the way, and worked with some great teammates.

I designed the prototype of the website using figma and worked back-end on the calculator code using Python and the Tkinter GUI. I did the research, and provided the proper calculations that the code needed to include. I also worked on the entire Devpost submission, which includes the write-ups, links, and image uploads. Lastly, I helped write the script for our presentation, and also presented the website with another member.

Overall, I am happy with my teammates as they all did a great job and contributed to the project in their own respective ways. With over 24hrs of nonstop development, and with this being my first hackathon, I can safely say that we worked hard and got the job done. I learned many things, and will continue to participate to develop myself and grow. Great work!

The majority of the work I did was on the creation of the calculator setting up classes and functions in order to take advantage of formulas provided by my teammate and to make user experience easy and comfortable by adding fail safes so the software doesn't show an error easily and providing notifications on what the user inputted. Then I converted most of the core elements of the program into tkinter a GUI module with the some help from a teammate. I also helped many people with their contributions from web design, editing the html document of the website and providing ideas on what to add on the website.
This was a very fun experience and I worked with an amazing team.
