Inspiration
Many students at UMD feel isolated in their classes because they do not feel connected to their peers and don’t have peers to reach out to when they are doing work. This can lead to decreased productivity, increased stress, and overall mental health issues.
What it does
TerpMatchGroup is a web application where UMD students can create and find communities they belong to.
How we built it
We compile a React framework into a HTML/CSS frontend for the website. We use Axios/Cheerio to automatically pull course data from Testudo (although it's not completely working as of yet).
Challenges we ran into
Aside from the usual debugging and general frustration that comes along with coding up a project, we also ran into extensive difficulties in getting the web scraper to work.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This is our first real webpage we created using React, and we're quite proud of the work we've managed to get done as a team in such a short time span!
What we learned
We learned a lot not only about the fundamental quirks of the React language and CSS, but also about the tools and libraries available to web developers using React to build fully-functional webpages.
What's next for TerpMatchGroup
We plan to fully roll out the custom group as well as web-scraping features, along with chat rooms for each group.
