Inspiration
We were inspired by the lack of resources to gain information about housing on campus. A lot of the time you would just have to hear about which dorms and apartments offered good-quality housing through word-of-mouth.
What it does
We created a website where students can leave reviews on housing around the University of Maryland. You can leave 5 star rating reviews from anywhere to dorms to apartments off-campus.
How we built it
We created this website using Visual Studio Code where we used an extension to cast it on a browser. Using languages like javascript, HTML and CSS, we were able to create a functioning website.
Challenges we ran into
A lot of the backend was very tricky to portray. A lot of us had limited experience working with languages like javascript and HTML, and learning how to store the reviews on the website for each residency was definitely a challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
An accomplishment we are proud of is likely the system of reviews. It shows the average rating of the residency along with a star representation using half-stars and full-stars. The backend to frontend work on the review system was a great challenge to overcome.
What we learned
We learned a lot about basic HTML structures and how backend web development works in javascript. A lot of us also had very limited exposure to these languages so it was a good learning experience!
What's next for TerpHousingHub
We still need to host it on a public domain so any student can leave reviews. Right now it is just on one computer, and it has limited use on GitPages.
