Inspiration

I started using Linux about half a year ago, and I need to use the terminal a lot for computer operations inside the operating system. As my terminal commands often ended up in failures, I decided to build an AI tool to help me correct my commands

What it does

TermAdvisor scans the command that you typed in the terminal. If the command is wrong, the user than call TermAdvisor to provide the cause of the failure and options that may fit the user's case.

How we built it

I built it mostly with Python, and it calls external APIs like Nebius and Tavily. I first design the overall structure and separated it into parts (like cli, search, capture, etc) and then built it one by one. The key is to use the AI models wisely, manage the structure and the code implementation, and keep testing it with different examples.

Challenges we ran into

I think the biggest challenge when building TermAdvisor is to capture the commands reliably. During the development stage, TermAdvisor could capture the wrong prompt and explaining something unrelated to the terminal command from you. This problem requires a lot of testing and fixing the part which reads the command properly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I think the best thing about TermAdvisor is its friendliness towards the ones who have limited budget on external APIs. Most of the failures will be fixed locally so the users can leave their resources to complex problems that actually needs detailed review. Another thing I am proud about TermAdvisor is that it respects its users. It is simply an "advisor" so the ones who fear that AI models are having secret operations without their knowledge can use it without fear. TermAdvisor has no ability to execute any commands, and I think this is a feature that not only helps the users learn, but empowering their control over their machines.

What we learned

My past projects are mostly web-based, and TermAdvisor is the first time my project is an App instead of a website. Throughout the development of TermAdvisor, I learned how to build Apps that operate directly inside the client's machines instead of staying as a simple website.

What's next for TermAdvisor

I am thinking about building more tools on the terminal to help users execute commands. I am also thinking about making it more personalized so TermAdvisor can change its tone tailored to each individual user
