The problem

AI makes it easy to get a summary, but a summary is not the same as understanding. Learners still need a clear path, useful practice, and a way to find out what they have not really understood yet.

What TenSteps does

TenSteps turns a topic into a guided, ten-step learning journey. It starts with multi-perspective research and a map of disagreements, then narrows the topic into learning resources and short lessons. Learners finish by practicing active recall, explaining ideas in their own words, and creating a one-page cheat sheet.

You can add your own text, links, or files as learning material. The app uses AI to help organize the journey and generate learning activities, while the learner does the practice and explains what they learned.

How we built it

TenSteps has a native iOS app built with Swift and SwiftUI, backed by a Node.js service and SQLite. The service stores learning journeys and progress across sessions. The app currently uses Apple StoreKit for in-app purchases.

Challenges and what we learned

The central design challenge is making a long learning process feel manageable without turning it into a stream of AI-generated text. TenSteps separates research, practice, recall, and explanation into distinct steps so learners have to work with the material, not only read it.

Building the project reinforced that useful AI learning depends on the structure around the model: clear step goals, saved progress, relevant source material, and meaningful opportunities for the learner to check their understanding.
