Inspiration

Multiple friends who own small companies have complained about how difficult it is to do simple inventory tracking tasks. My experience doing business intelligence SaaS has taught me that many even high revenue small businesses are not being served at all with good business intelligence tools.

What is it?

It's an extremely unopinionated inventory tracking system. It aims to replace shared excel spreadsheets people use to keep track of their things.

What did you do?

I (ryan) did the backend in Golang. Alyson did the frontend in react.

What were the challenges?

End users understand the types of queries that they want to make against their data, but making an interface that allows them to be as expressive as they want is difficult both from a technical and interface-design perspective.

What are you proud of?

This is most of the way to something I could see friends of mine using (but obviously not a finished product). It was fun building it.

What I learned

I probably could have written a lot of this faster in python, but wanted to use golang because it's new and fun for me. That isn't always the best choice.

What's next for Tensile IMS

Short term: billing, finishing the product: creating a landing page, implementing more features/polish/better query generation

Long term: The goal is that this is a cheap inroad into small business relationships. Eventually we want to be doing a CRM, billing, hours tracking etc. and running analytics on these things for small business owners. Our rationale is that this market is huge, and while there are offerings (hubspot, for instance), our experience talking to business owners means they're still not being served.
