Inspiration
I recently bought a Tamagotchi—a Japanese digital pet you care for—and noticed how disciplined I became in looking after it. That inspired me to combine the idea with a to-do app to create the same sense of discipline.
What it does
The users create tasks, set a daily goal, and complete tasks to feed and grow one of five virtual pets. Each pet has different emotions and growth stages, while a demo mode lets judges explore everything immediately (activate in settings).
How we built it
I created the concept, visual style, pet designs, and product flow, then used Codex with GPT-5.6 to help implement and debug the task system, pet progression, onboarding, responsive design, and deployment.
Challenges we ran into
The hardest part was making tasks, daily progress, pet moods, and saved data work together reliably. I learned how much testing, iteration, and attention to small design details matter when turning an idea into a polished product—especially since this is the first app I’ve ever built.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I discovered the hackathon with only two days remaining, so I’m especially proud that I managed to turn my idea into a complete, polished, and publicly deployed app within that time. This is also the first full app I’ve ever built, which makes finishing Tendly even more meaningful to me.
What we learned
We learned that there is far more to building an app than the initial idea. Beyond the main features, details like design, onboarding, persistence, responsiveness, testing, and deployment all play a major role in making a product feel complete.
What's next for Tendly
Next, we want to expand Tendly with more pets, accessories, environments, deeper progression, account syncing across devices and lots of cool animations for the pets to feel alive. We also plan to add smarter task organization and reminders while keeping the app simple, calm, and fun to use. This is also the first full app I have ever built, which makes completing Tendly even more meaningful to me.
