13 years ago, my brother and I developed a story concept about a group of ten scrappy scoundrels roving around a post apocalyptic desert landscape encountering all sorts of characters and dispensing robin hood type justice in a lawless world. It was a blend of ideas from things we loved growing up like video games, old westerns, Star Wars, and Wile E Coyote/Roadrunner cartoons. But aside from the occasional mention at a family gathering, the concept remained shelved.
For the past few months, I've been tinkering with AI to see what's possible in the world of storytelling, and our old concept came roaring back into focus. And while I don't think it passes the broadcast level quality test—I was able to transform this idea from a collection of disorganized thoughts into something tangible in a relatively short amount of time. I discovered that the special part of this process was that in using AI to create a vertical pilot for this idea, it led my brother and I to resurrect an old writing session where we put pen to paper and drafted six more stories within this universe.
I don't know if anything will come of this, but I do know that AI has been an incredibly valuable space for me to experiment, improvise, and prove concepts that I would have otherwise left on the shelf to collect dust. I think my main takeaway is that generative AI is a springboard.
