Inspiration

Community events and municipal health meetings often go unnoticed because they happen at specific times, while maps only show static locations. We wanted to help people discover and plan for events in real-time, so engagement in the community becomes easier and more effective. Additionally, our platform allows users to filter events specifically for women, helping address issues around women’s access to health, networking, and community opportunities.

What it does

Temporal GIS adds the time dimension to a traditional map. Users can see events happening right now or this weekend, with real-time updates from google calendars, so they never miss a community event. They can also filter events specifically for women, making it easier to discover opportunities that address women’s health, networking, and community engagement.

How we built it

We built Temporal GIS using a GIS mapping framework and implemented a temporal slider to filter events by time. Events are synced in real-time using google calendar. We layered these events on the map, allowing users to filter, view, and interact with them easily.

Challenges we ran into

  • Scraping the county website for events.
  • Making the website intuitive while handling dynamic, real-time data.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully built a working temporal GIS map with real-time calendar integration, allowing users to view events by both location and time through an intuitive interface.

What we learned

  • Real-time API synchronization can be challenging but is rewarding.
  • A simple, intuitive UI is critical for users to understand temporal data.

What's next for Temporal GIS

Next, we plan to automate event updates by parsing the web and additional online sources for community events.
