Inspiration
Welcome to Los Angeles, a dynamic city known for its rich culture, diverse communities, and vibrant energy. As we prepare to host the 2028 Olympic Games, our app is designed to be your ultimate companion, offering immersive AR experiences, exploration tools, and a community forum to connect with locals and fellow visitors. We are committed to making LA more accessible for all by helping close the digital divide, ensuring that everyone—regardless of background—can fully participate in the Olympic excitement and explore the city with ease.
What it does
GoLA28 is a comprehensive mobile application that enhances the Olympic experience for visitors and locals alike: **AR Olympic Venues: Users would have been able to point their phones at Olympic venues to see overlays of schedules, athlete information, and historical facts. Interactive City Map: A detailed map of Los Angeles with points of interest, public transportation routes, and real-time updates on events and crowds. Community Forum: A space for users to share tips, meet-up plans, and discuss their Olympic experiences.
How we built it
We developed GoLA28 using a cross-platform approach to ensure wide accessibility: React Native for the core application, allowing us to deploy on both iOS and Android. ARKit and ARCore for the augmented reality features. Firebase for real-time database and user authentication.
Challenges we ran into
Our main challenge was developing an IOS app with Windows devices. Once we had access to Apple Developer accounts, internal outages were preventing us from implementing the AR Features. However, we are excited to work on the AR components once these internal issues are resolved.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Created an intuitive user interface that caters to both tech-savvy users and those less familiar with mobile apps.
What we learned
The value of community engagement in app development and feature prioritization.
What's next for GoLA28
Developing and expanding AR features to include virtual tours of Los Angeles Olympic venues and landmarks. Implementing a gamification system to encourage exploration and community engagement. Developing partnerships with more local businesses and cultural institutions which will be displayed on an interactive map. To further push LA's green agenda, users can earn green points by visiting local businesses, recycling, and more which will all be tracked through an easy photo submission. There is so much creative and analytical potential that can be created with these photos from users around the world.
