Earth Hacks - Third place winner!

Inspiration

Not everyone has the time to volunteer, likewise, not everyone can afford to volunteer.

What it does

Cleanthis.space connects environmentally conscious donors and eager community members to help out in our public places. We envision a platform that gives events like beach cleanups, trail restoration, and tree planting a lot of exposure to give them the most impact.

How we built it

We used React to make a progressive web app. On our back end is a Raspberry Pi running a Caddy server. Cloudflare proxies the DNS for our domain.com domain.

Challenges we ran into

It always takes so long to get everyone's development environment set up. Sometimes things just don't want to play nice.

I've worked on the landing page to give a good first impression to the people seeing our project! I picked up different technologies and libraries such as React.js, scsass, and Javascript to make it. I also worked on overflow issues with one of my teammates and we figured out how to center text on top of an image!!! My teammates also got Google Maps API working, along with tracking when certain fundraisers are fully funded. We also got to pull images from Google. Now our site looks more professional and cool. I can't believe that we did this all in a day!

Update 2: Our website is live with our domain.com domain! I had a couple issues running into rate limits with let's encrypt, but just waiting an hour meant let's encrypt could issue more certificates for us. We'll share with you when we have a little more working.

Update 1: Last night we got our idea! This morning we are working to make a web app using React. I was able to host our app on a Raspberry Pi that's connected to the internet. Next, I'm going to link our domain to the Raspberry Pi. This is all pretty simple to do with Caddy 2 and Cloudflare. Good luck everyone!
