The TeleTroll is a simple device that sits between the telephone and jack, normally passing calls through untouched. When a user receives an illegal robocall, they activate the TeleTroll, which then silently redirects the call over the Internet to an FTC robocall handling service. The goal of this service is to reach a human operator and occupy as much of their time as possible. An unsuccessful sales call that could have ended in seconds now requires minutes. Meanwhile, the user hangs up and goes about their business. If the TeleTroll reached modest deployment, robocalls would become much less profitable. It would be too costly to find the rare individuals who are actually receptive to the telemarketing pitch among the many trolls.
