Inspiration

As a group of college students, we're aware of the high levels of stress with the current climate. Due to health official guidelines, many universities have chosen to take classes online. Studies have shown a lack of social interaction can lead to adverse physical and mental health conditions. Through our community-based platform, college students can interact with each other, offering support for their fellow classmates.

What it does

Our web application includes a variety of features to help students monitor and address mental health concerns. These features include:

  • Journaling enabling students to scribe their thoughts and read past entries
  • A survey questioning students about their mental state (i.e. stressed, unmotivated, etc.) seeking to match individuals with the most relevant Tranquil and university-specific resources
  • A community page enabling students to create and join support groups likely based on their survey answers
  • An exercise tracker helping students to motivate themselves and others
  • Resource pages helping students seeking professional help, meditation guides, and more

How we built it

Our pro team used the MERN stack to put together a web application. Our front end uses a combination of React and Redux. We enabled the use of Semantic-UI for styling purposes to make the application user friendly and polished.

Challenges we ran into

We hit a wall when it seemed that our ideas weren't coming together, and the clock was ticking. To remedy this, we had a team meeting with our coaches and outlined all our thoughts on what was important. This allowed us to consolidate our ideas, conceptualize a cohesive concept, and move forward with developing both the business and technical aspects of our product.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our resilience. This experience challenged us to be very precise and detail-oriented for our fast-paced work with the timeline of the project. The business team talked to many mental health professionals and academics to ensure our product created real value for people struggling with their mental health. Additionally, the tech team learned an incredible amount through the development process and are ultimately much better programmers for it. As a team, we are confident and excited about our product.

What we learned

How to create and build a business at a rapid pace from ideation through the prototype. Overcoming time constraints, challenges with remote work, and working through a learning curve made this project a journey. Ultimately, we were rewarded as our hard work and dedication lead to a product we truly believe was worth working toward.

What's next for Telehealth_02

We are hopeful that our product will inspire higher education institutions around the country to examine the robustness of its mental health services and implement improvements to enable students to get help during (and after) this unprecedented time. This project forced us to examine the real impacts of the many stressors placed on college students and the complexities and subtleties involved in addressing them. We will move forward better armed with the knowledge to help our schools, our communities, and ourselves.
