Teknologie: ESCAPE ROOM

Inspiration:

In this day and age of living amongst the pandemic, we are all forced to stay within the bounds of our homes. In such an isolated environment, all of us, especially children are greatly affected by the fear of the virus and also the restlessness from the boredom at home. Taking such scenarios into consideration, we from Teknologie decided to make a website aimed at children to keep them busy while simultaneously training their brains with some fun exercises.

Functionality + Key Features:

We decided to implement our ideas in the form of an escape room, mainly because of how fun and interactive they always are. However, since there aren’t many escape rooms specially designed for kids (as they can tend to become too difficult or too gorey), we came up with one which is both fun and also challenging. It consists of two main stages: an interactive General Knowledge quiz and a card memory game, Memorace. Both activities are very engaging and the time-bound memory game is also a fun way to test your speed along with accuracy of memory.

How we built it:

Being novices, we learnt most of our codes online from youtube tutorials and courses. All of us divided the work into four parts, with Tarun making the home page and compiling it, me (Shomili) making the memory game and writing this write up, Swasti making the interactive quiz and Suhith making the powerpoint presentation. After writing our individual pieces of code with HTML, JavaScript and Python, we compiled it on Visual Studio Code before submitting it on devpost.

Challenges we faced:

Tediously editing minute formatting details on HTML CSS. Compiling files with different functions (also bridging the gaps between Mac and Windows files.) Making and editing the video. Debugging logic and syntax errors.

What we learned:

This entire day was nothing short of a learning journey for us. From learning to use and operating the software by watching lengthy youtube tutorials to spending hours on end coordinating and debugging our diverse codes, we all have taken away a lot from this hackathon. We also learned the importance of time management and teamwork with the experience of an intense time-crunch due to the last minute changes in our plans. By learning to accommodate for mistakes and learning to adjust with the limited time, we learned to be there for each other as a team and this definitely taught us about the strengths of working as a team.

Accomplishments we are proud of:

To be frank, this whole ordeal was itself an achievement for us. Completing the project in time along with all the other tasks like preparing for the presentation, making the video and write-up while being amateurs in coding itself makes us very proud of ourselves.

What’s next for our project:

Right now, the escape room is very much still in development as we have a limited number of activities to be a more long-term website. If we get time after this, we would love to further expand our website to encompass more activities and perhaps also create more rooms within itself to double the fun!
