Inspiration
We noticed through much research that there are fewer students attending classes and exhibiting more disengagement because of COVID-19 and distance learning. Furthermore, they don't have that peer-to-peer interaction that they would normally have in a classroom, and they don't have an outlet to use outside of the general learning and testing environment. Essentially, we are fusing education and current popular gaming concepts to create a much more engaging learning platform.
What it does
Our system is essentially a combination of RPG-style gaming along with an educational component that allows students to be more engaged in their learning and studies.
How I built it
We primarily utilized Figma to create the system and demonstrate its capabilities as an educational tool. Figma came in handy because of its ability to showcase the animation, UI mockup, side of the product. This factor was a huge plus for us considering that limited time required us to focus more on the demonstration and technical aspects.
Challenges I ran into
Since building an entire functioning app within 48 hours was almost impossible, we had to resort to UI mockups in order to accomplish our task of demonstrating the product. Therefore, Figma came in handy, acting as an animation-sort platform that gave a brief demonstration of what we created. The downside, however, is the fact that Figma provide snapshots of the game in action rather than the actual scenarios that take place during the game.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We are most proud of the fact that we were able to collaborate in a way where communication and dedication were above and beyond. By constant communication and attention to detail, we were able to constantly check up on each other and understand who was in charge of what, as well as the strengths and limitations of a person's abilities towards a particular task. While finishing the product itself was an accomplishment itself, the most significant accomplish was the ability to work so collaboratively.
What I learned
We learned that building a business is much harder than it looks in real life. While people such as Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Steve Jobs may have experienced and accomplished insane feats (and made them look easier than it actually is), the sacrifices that took place behind closed doors was even greater. As a team, we especially valued the concept of hard work within the role of team collaboration and communication because of how we all knew that each person's role would ultimately lead to the outcome that we desired. All in all, teamwork success requires a group of people who are like-minded in level of ambition, yet distinct in backgrounds and goals.
What's next for Teggregate - Edtale Island
We hope to expand our network to other schools in the United States since pre-COVID statistics show that approximately 58% of schools in the U.S. have laptop carts, allowing students to gain access to technology during instructional hours. We also hope to expand our subject availabilities so that more teachers are able to access and use our platform to increase engagement in their classrooms. Furthermore, we hope to include features such as question pool integration, different age groups, PVP, and full scaling systems to further our abilities to expand the gaming settings and options.
