Inspiration
Our inspiration for this project was rooted from when we saw the amount of people suffering from severe obesity. Nowadays, teens are not getting as much exercise these days, as they are constantly online on their devices! Research shows that around 22.2% of teenage adolescents (Ages 12-19) are obese or overweight. Childhood obesity is a very serious condition as it can lead to significant health problems like diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer. Our goal is to motivate these young adults so they can stay healthy and still have fun! Explore our website to find out more about our personalized plan and how it can help you stay active and FIT!
What it does
Our website has many features. When you enter the website, there is a home page that explains our goals, you can click on a link to get to the sign-up page. On the sign-up page, you have to enter some personal information, then you can move to the Survey. In the Survey, we have linked a Body Mass Index calculator, where you can find your BMI. You input that, as well as some other information such as weight, height, age, etc. if you want to. This moves you to the next page, where we have created a check box feature where you can check the BMI number that relates to you and this leads you to one of multiple plans that we have created to promote a healthy lifestyle. We also provide tips on how to maintain a balance. as well as a chat box, to work with health coaches if you have questions about your plan.
How we built it
We used HTML and CSS for our coding. We have created 9 different screens that all use different functions. We mainly are using the text functions in HTML and we use the input functions in a couple places as well. We have successfully linked all of the pages together in a subsequent order, and we are also have a banner at the top with quick links. We have created multiple features to allow the user to be comfortable with their plan, including the chat bot.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge that was prevalent was that some of the members of our team had not worked with HTML before. We had to rely on other coding knowledge that we already had in Python and JAVA, as well as doing a lot of research on how HTML works. We had some issues with the code that we had to debug throughout the Hackathon. An example of this is where we were not able to create a top banner above the code, and that the proportions of our pictures were not lining up with the originals. We researched and worked as a team in order to keep trying, and to come to a working result.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are new to HTML coding, and this was our very first coding Hackathon! We learned many new coding aspects of HTML. We are proud of including a chat box feature in our program, where the user can input text. We also have multiples pages within the program, so the user can navigate between several pages. Additionally, our logo is visually appealing too, with a fun and energetic vibe to it! We are extremely proud of what we have accomplished in today's Hackathon!
What we learned
The most rewarding aspect of this Hackathon was collaborating with a talented and dedicated team. We shared ideas, learned from each other's strengths, and supported each other through challenges. Our collective passion for creating a positive impact drove us to deliver a functional prototype. We were able to learn about how to se input functions in HTML as well as being able to use CSS for formatting and stylistic preferences. We learned a lot about coding in general and about how to make websites that apply to all and are inclusive.
What's next for TeenFIT
We can’t wait to continue our journey with TeenFIT! Our website right now is a great start, and in the future we are planning to expand our app, where we can hopefully have it accessible to all ages. Additionally, we want to add some more motivational features, such as prizes, leaderboards, and a way to chat with your friends that are also on the app. Overall, this Hackathon taught us many useful skills that we can use in the future, and we are excited to continue!
