Inspiration
High school student juggle assignments, extracurriculars, scholarships, volunteer hours, competitions, and personal commitments across multiple apps and calendars on a daily basis. Existing planners focus on numbering tasks, but few help students decide "what to work on right now?" based on urgency, workload, and available time.
TeenBridge was built to bridge that gap by acting as an intelligent academic planning assistant rather than just a digital to-do list.
What it does
TeenBridge helps students organize their academic and extracurricular responsibilities in one place. Users can:
- Add assignments with deadlines, estimated study time, difficulty, and importance.
- Automatically generate a balanced study schedule based on available daily study time.
- Track progress by marking completed study blocks.
- Manage scholarships, hackathons, internships, volunteer opportunities, and competitions.
- Receive personalized dashboard warnings for overdue assignments, upcoming deadlines, overloaded schedules, and opportunities that are closing soon.
- Save all progress locally so information persists between sessions.
Instead of simply displaying tasks, TeenBridge efficiently distributes study sessions across available days while respecting user-defined weekday and weekend study limits.
How I built it
TeenBridge was developed entirely in Java using Java Swing for the graphical user interface and AWT for layouts and window management.
The application uses:
- Java Collections (
ArrayList,HashMap,TreeMap) - Object-Oriented Programming principles
- Custom scheduling algorithms
- Priority scoring based on deadlines, workload, difficulty, and importance
- Java Time API for date calculations
- Object Serialization for persistent local data storage
- Event-driven programming using Swing listeners
Challenges we ran into
Designing an effective scheduling algorithm was the biggest challenge. Rather than assigning study blocks sequentially, the application balances workload across multiple days while considering remaining study capacity, task priority, and approaching deadlines.
Another challenge was ensuring completed work wasn't lost whenever schedules were regenerated. This required preserving completed study blocks while intelligently rebuilding only unfinished portions of the schedule.
Accomplishments
- Built a fully functional desktop application entirely in Java.
- Designed a custom scheduling algorithm from scratch.
- Created an intuitive multi-tab interface for assignments, schedules, opportunities, and settings.
- Implemented persistent local storage without requiring a database.
- Developed a system that helps students manage both academic work and extracurricular opportunities within a single platform.
What I learned
This project strengthened our understanding of Java Swing, object-oriented software design, event-driven programming, serialization, and algorithm development. More importantly, it demonstrated how thoughtful software design can solve everyday problems faced by students.
